Pfarrkirche hl. Familie und Pfarrzentrum, Kapfenberg

The Pfarrkirche Kapfenberg – Hl. Familie stands in the Johann Nestroy Straße in the Walfersam district of Kapfenberg, a town in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district of Styria. It is a Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to the Holy Family and forms a parish association with two other Kapfenberg parishes. After the Second World War, many people from South-Eastern Europe sought refuge in Austria and settled in Kapfenberg, leading to the creation of the church’s predecessor as a temporary wooden structure. The church became an independent parish in 1951, with Johann List as its first parish priest and Johann Weber, later Bishop of Graz-Seckau, serving as one of its early chaplains. Completed in 1962, the building reflects the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council, a pioneering approach in Styrian church architecture. In 2017, an arson attack caused serious damage to the interior, particularly the confessionals, prompting extensive restoration work that began the following year. Designed by architect Ferdinand Schuster, the church features a detached bell tower and stained-glass windows by Mario Decleva. The structure’s modern lines and functional layout distinguish it from older churches in the area. Inside, visitors find a space shaped by the reforms of the 1960s, with clear lines and an emphasis on communal worship. The surroundings include the quiet streets of Walfersam, where the church serves as both a spiritual centre and a local landmark.
