Trumerseen

Three closely linked lakes in northern Salzburg form the Trumer Seen nature reserve. The Obertrumer See, Mattsee and Grabensee lie in the Flachgau district, surrounded by protected meadows and moors. The lakes sit in a moraine landscape shaped long ago by the Traun and Salzach glaciers. The region holds two main conservation areas. The Landschaftsschutzgebiet Trumer Seen covers the lakes and much of their shoreline, while the older Salzburger Naturschutzgebiet Trumerseen protects fragile northern moors and the Egelseen. Salzburg’s oldest nature reserve covers 413.89 hectares and extends into Upper Austria as part of the wider Wiesengebiete und Seen im Alpenvorland European site. Visitors walk quiet paths between the lakes, where rare plants grow in the fens. The protected moors around Obertrumersee and Grabensee offer flat trails and views across open water. Nearby villages like Obertrum am See and Mattsee provide simple places to stop before returning to the peaceful shores.
