Schloss Haltenbergstetten

Haltenbergstetten Castle stands on a gentle slope above the village of Haltenbergstetten, near Niederstetten in Baden-Württemberg. Built around 1200 by the House of Hohenlohe, it began as a medieval castle before becoming a Renaissance palace in the 16th century. The complex forms an irregular quadrangle with wings enclosing a courtyard. A Baroque palace church with Rococo furnishings and a prince’s box sits in the east wing. The Princess’s House, with its mansard roof and bay windows, overlooks the grounds from the slope beyond the road. The castle has passed through many hands over the centuries. After the Hohenlohe family, it belonged to the Counts of Castell, the Schenken von Limpurg, the Lords of Rosenberg, and the Counts of Hatzfeld. From 1803, the Princes of Hohenlohe-Jagstberg have owned the palace. The Hunting Museum in the east and south wings displays hunting trophies, taxidermied animals, and collections of native and exotic birds. The natural history museum, once housed here, has since closed. Visitors find a quiet ensemble of late Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. The palace church’s Rococo interior and prince’s box remain well preserved. The Princess’s House, with its distinctive mansard roof and bay windows, is a notable feature. A round tower stands at the northwest corner, while a polygonal stair tower projects into the courtyard on the north wing. The main entrance lies near the east wing, leading into a peaceful courtyard framed by these historic buildings.
