Vorderer Geißlkopf
The Vorderer Geißlkopf is a rugged 2,974-metre peak in the Goldberggruppe of the Austrian Central Alps. It stands on the border between the Salzburg municipalities of Bad Gastein, Flattach and Mallnitz, where its upper slopes belong to Hohe Tauern National Park and the Flattach side lies within the Wurten nature reserve. A narrow ridge links it to the Hinterer Geißlkopf eight hundred and forty metres to the northwest, and together they frame the Nassfeld valley. The crest continues west past the Niedersachsenhaus and Schareck to the Westerfrölkekogel, while north of the summit a block glacier clings to the slope. From the peak a small stream, the Höllkarbach, drops into the Nassfelder Ache. The mountain is one of fifty-five summits that form the Gasteiner Gipfelkranz, the highest class of the Austrian Alpine Club’s Gastein Wandernadels. Walkers earn the award by completing all the peaks, and the Vorderer Geißlkopf is reached along the Central Alpine Long-Distance Trail which crosses its eastern, southern and western flanks. The name Geißlkopf comes from a Slavic word for a male goat or chamois, reflecting the region’s alpine fauna. Beneath the summit rocks lie bands of calc-silicate gneiss and quartzite, with patches of green schist and phyllite. Rare lichens and alpine bumblebees cling to these mineral surfaces, while the slopes support a few hardy plant species. From the summit visitors look across to the Hohe Tauern’s highest summits and down into the deeply cut valleys of the Gastein and Mallnitz areas. The ridge path offers narrow ledges and sudden drops, and the block glacier below glints with scattered ice blocks even in summer. The summit itself is a small rocky dome where the Central Alpine Trail crosses, marked by a modest cairn. In clear weather the view stretches from the Grossglockner in the west to the Hochalmspitze in the east, taking in the entire High Tauern chain. The air is thin and the wind often strong, yet the isolation and silence make the climb worthwhile.
