Kingsgate Castle

Kingsgate Castle stands on the cliffs above Kingsgate Bay near Broadstairs in Kent. It is a mock castle, built in the 1760s as a stable block for Holland House, the country residence of Lord Holland. The name comes from an old landing spot used by Charles II and other monarchs such as George II. The building fell into ruin soon after construction, leaving only the large round tower as the original structure. Later it became the home of John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury, before being sold in 1922. It was once a fashionable hotel before being converted into private flats in 1954. The castle is worth the journey for its connections to British history and notable figures. Charles II and George II both used the nearby cove, and the building was once part of a grand estate. Lord Holland, a prominent figure, commissioned the structure, while later it housed Baron Avebury, a well-known scientist and politician. The castle’s history reflects changes in how grand buildings were used over the centuries. Its transformation from a stable block to a hotel and then flats shows its adaptability.
