Pfarrkirche hl. Johannes der Täufer, Brückl

The parish church of Brückl stands on a gentle rise above the modern centre of the village. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and first appears in records between 1207 and 1230. The present late-Gothic building was completed in the first quarter of the 16th century, its stone roof slabs and angled buttresses still showing the date 1521 on one corner. The west and south doorways are richly moulded, and a small polygonal stair turret fills the angle between tower and nave. Inside, the single nave has three bays under a star-ribbed vault, while the two-bay choir shares the same vaulting. Above the sharply pointed chancel arch the years 1516 and 1555 are carved, along with Gothic master marks and a note of a 1903 restoration. The tower basement is rib-vaulted, the sacristy has a groin vault, and the west gallery carries the dates 1522 and 1535. The churchyard lies immediately beside the building, its southern tower crowned by a pointed spire with gablets. A two-bay sacristy projects from the north side of the choir, and a small rectangular chapel is built into the angle between tower and nave. The whole ensemble, with its stone roofs, steep buttresses and finely carved portals, offers a clear picture of late-medieval craftsmanship in a quiet Carinthian village.
