Kulturhaus Lüdenscheid

The Kulturhaus stands in the southern part of Lüdenscheid’s town centre, close to the Wilhelmstraße shopping district and the town hall. It was completed in 1981 to designs by the Stuttgart practice Gutbrod, Billing, Peters, Ruff, who drew inspiration from Berlin’s Philharmonie for both interior and exterior. The large theatre hall seats 519 people on fixed chairs or up to 672 when extra places are added, and includes an orchestra pit and rising rows of seats arranged like vineyard terraces. In 1983 the building received the Beton architecture prize for its bold concrete construction. Since April 2013 the city has spent about 100 000 euros on safety upgrades, including a new fire-alarm system, replacement exit-lighting and a refreshed gallery walkway. The venue is now led by actor Dirk Lattemann, who took charge in July 2024. Throughout the year it presents opera, operetta, musicals, ballet, plays, concerts and a wide programme of small-scale variety acts. Visitors enter a spacious foyer that leads directly to the theatre’s main auditorium. The gently sloping seating rises toward the back wall, giving every row a clear view of the stage and orchestra pit. The side walls and ceiling carry warm wood panelling that softens the concrete surfaces. Outside, the building’s bold geometry and textured surfaces stand against the surrounding mid-rise shops and offices, marking it as a landmark of 1980s civic design.
