Alt-Lichtenegg

Alt-Lichtenegg stands on a spur above the Illmensee valley in the Sigmaringen district of Baden-Württemberg. The ruined hilltop castle once commanded views across the surrounding countryside from its 770-metre height. Built in the High Middle Ages, it belonged to local lords who controlled the route between the Danube and Lake Constance. Over centuries the walls gradually collapsed, leaving only scattered stone remnants. Dense woodland now surrounds the site, making it hard to spot without a guide. The remains lie half a kilometre southwest of the village of Lichtenegg. The modest ruins still show the layout of the old stronghold. Archaeologists have dated pottery and tools from the 12th and 13th centuries found on the slope. A low bank marks the outer edge of the bailey where stables and workshops once stood. The main tower base survives as a grassy mound near the centre. Visitors can walk a short forest path to reach the spot where the keep once rose above the treetops. From the clearing visitors look down over the Illmensee valley and the rolling hills beyond. The quiet spot offers a sense of how the castle once guarded the medieval route. On clear days the Alps appear faintly in the south. The site is little known, so it is rarely crowded. A bench near the ruins lets walkers rest and imagine the castle’s former strength.
