Kalkgrund lighthouse

The Leuchtturm Kalkgrund stands in the Flensburger Förde, guiding ships past the Kalkgrund shoal. It is a fully automatic lighthouse built in 1962 to replace older lightships. The tower rises 24.45 metres above a steel-and-concrete base driven 32 metres into the seabed. Its light, powered by a 1 kW halogen bulb and a 200 mm Fresnel lens, reaches 24 nautical miles. A radar beacon, automatic foghorn and water-level gauge support navigation. The tower is lit at night and monitored from Travemünde. From the Geltinger Birk headland the red-and-white tower is clearly visible. A webcam offers live views and may show porpoises. Nearby Falshöft lighthouse, on dry land, can be visited instead.
