Dorfkapelle Unterweitersdorf

The Roman Catholic village chapel in Unterweitersdorf stands on Untere Dorfstraße in the municipality of Unterweitersdorf in the Freistadt district of Upper Austria. It belongs to the Gallneukirchen deanery within the Diocese of Linz. The chapel was built in 1876 with funds from a bequest by Leopold and Rosina Pröselmayr. The tower, added in 1884, was paid for by donations from local residents. Repairs to the roof frame took place in 1966 and a full renovation followed in 1995. Its simple exterior has a single bay with a round-arched window and a broad tower projecting forward. The tower’s stonework is of rusticated blocks, its sound openings are pointed arches, and it is capped by a steep pyramid roof. Inside, the chapel is a single rectangular room under a plain barrel vault. A carved crucifix from the late 19th century hangs above the altar. The chapel’s quiet setting on the village street offers a place for reflection. Its modest scale and clean lines make it a modest landmark in the community. The late-19th-century crucifix inside is the only notable artwork recorded. The chapel remains an unassuming but recognised example of rural Upper Austrian church architecture.
