River Keer

The River Keer winds for ten kilometres through northern England. It starts on Docker Moor near the villages of Whittington and Hutton Roof. From there it flows west, passing Capernwray, Borwick and Warton. Pine Lake lies along its banks before the river reaches Carnforth. After Carnforth the Keer crosses salt marshes on its way to the Kent estuary. The river forms part of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For much of its course it marks the boundary between Lancashire and Cumbria. It also traces the old county line between Lancashire and Westmorland. The Keer’s westerly route takes it through quiet countryside and small villages. Its final stretch through the salt marshes opens into Morecambe Bay. Visitors can walk the riverside paths near Capernwray and Borwick. The stretch past Pine Lake offers views of open water and woodland. At Carnforth the river widens before the salt marshes begin. The marshes provide a habitat for birds and plants typical of the bay’s edge. The whole river valley remains unspoilt and peaceful.
