Burgstall Roth

The Burgstall Roth stands on a low hill just north-west of the village of Roth, itself part of the market Zapfendorf in Upper Franconia. It was once a small medieval castle, built to guard the surrounding farmland and the road from Bamberg to Coburg. The only trace left today is a shallow depression in the ground where the keep once rose. Archaeologists have found fragments of pottery and iron nails, but no walls remain above ground. The site lies in a quiet stretch of countryside, surrounded by meadows and scattered woods. Historians recognise Burgstall Roth as one of many minor castles built in the 12th and 13th centuries to control local trade routes. The name ‘Roth’ probably comes from the red soil of the hill, a feature noted in medieval land registers. Unlike grand castles, this one was never expanded or rebuilt, so it offers a clear picture of how small frontier forts looked. Written records from the 14th century mention the castle only once, when it was abandoned and left to decay. Visitors today walk a short path from the village up to the hilltop. A simple information board explains what once stood there. From the centre of the old keep the view stretches across the valley to the wooded hills of the Steigerwald. The site is peaceful, with only the sound of skylarks and the occasional tractor breaking the silence. It is a place for quiet reflection rather than grand views.
