Church of St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich

The Church of St Mary the Virgin stands on Church Lane in Prestwich, a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury. It is an active Anglican parish church with a Grade I listing, recognised by Pevsner as a major building. A church has stood on the site since at least 1200, though Prestwich itself is not mentioned in the Domesday Book. The tower was added around 1500 by the first Earl of Derby, and the main body of the church was rebuilt in the early 16th century. Over the centuries, the church has seen many changes, including the addition of chapels, porches and a rebuilt chancel in the 19th century. The church’s architecture reflects its long history and craftsmanship. Built in red sandstone with stone slate roofs, it features a five-bay nave, a three-bay chancel and north and south aisles. The tower rises to 86 feet and includes a clock dated to 1656. Inside, the arcades rest on tall octagonal piers, and the roof contains carved bosses from the 16th century. The chancel is paved in polychromatic marble, and the reredos commemorates a child who died of scarlet fever in 1863. The organ, installed in 1889, was later rebuilt, and the church holds stained glass by Ward and Hughes, Clayton and Bell, and Shrigley and Hunt. The churchyard dates to the 14th century and contains over 5,000 graves of inmates from the former Prestwich County Asylum. A memorial to these unmarked graves was erected in 2006. Among the graves stands a Grade II* monument to John Brooks, a cotton entrepreneur and philanthropist, sculpted by John Thomas. The monument features classical figures representing Industry, Commerce and Charity. The church remains a place of worship and reflection, its architecture and history marking centuries of life in Prestwich.
