St Patrick's Church, Bordesley

St Patrick’s Church once stood in the Highgate district of Birmingham. Designed by John Loughborough Pearson, it opened in 1896 after the foundation stone was laid by the Earl Beauchamp. A later chancel, added by his son Frank in 1906–07, gave the building its final shape. The church served a parish carved from three neighbouring parishes in 1900. Services ended in 1964 and the structure was taken down two years later. The church is remembered for its fine craftsmanship. Pearson’s rood beam and two stained-glass windows were carefully removed before demolition. These pieces were later reinstalled at St Alban the Martyr, preserving part of the original interior. The building itself was a notable example of late 19th-century church architecture. Its brief life spanned less than seventy years. Today the site is a quiet open space where the church once stood. A few gravestones remain, marking the memory of the area’s past. The surrounding streets still carry the name Highgate, linking the modern neighbourhood to its history.
