Trinitatiskirche (Kittlitz)

The Trinitatiskirche stands in Kittlitz, a village in the Löbau district of Saxony. This Baroque hall church was built in two phases between 1749 and 1766 under the direction of Andreas Hünigen, using older medieval stonework. The tower followed in 1772–1775, and later changes included window alterations in 1859 and restorations in 1859, 1908 and 1990–1995. The building is a plastered rubble structure on a rectangular plan with a high hipped roof covered in coloured glazed tiles. Inside, slender wooden posts define a gallery hall beneath a simple barrel vault over the oval nave and narrower choir. The church’s furnishings date from its construction period. The altar rises to a tall ciborium topped by a Trinity glory, carved by Emanuel Gotthelf Siegismund and others. The pulpit, richly carved in rococo style, and the baptismal font on scrolled legs were made by the same team. The organ, built by Johann Gotthilf Bärmig in 1859, has 36 stops and a carved prospect with trumpeting angels. Four 18th-century tiled stoves remain in the glazed galleries, and behind the altar a 15th-century tomb commemorates Fritzko von Nostitz. Outside, the cemetery holds the Nostitz vault built around 1730, later converted into a mortuary. Its façade features pilasters, plaster panels and an iron gate with the von Hund coat of arms. Other 18th- and 19th-century gravestones line the walls, including those of the Sorbian composer Korla Awgust Kocor and the Domaška and Renč families, all bearing Sorbian inscriptions. A broad 19th-century arched gateway marks the eastern entrance.
