St Alban's Church, Sneinton

St Alban’s Church stands in Bond Street, Sneinton, a district of Nottingham in the East Midlands. Built in 1886–87 as an Anglican parish church, it was designed by George Frederick Bodley in brick and stone with a wagon roof. The church has a chancel, nave, aisles, a south porch and a small turret with one bell. Seats once held 565 worshippers. In 2003 the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham sold the redundant building to the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of the Holy Family of London. The church’s history includes a foundation stone laid by Rev Canon Vernon Wollaston Hutton in March 1886. It was consecrated the following July by Bishop George Ridding. A Lady chapel was added in 1898, and in 1912 the south aisle was lengthened with vestries built at a cost of £1,811. The east window, costing £200, commemorates Canon Hutton, who served St Stephen’s parish from 1868 to 1884. The screen was given by the sons of Thomas and Alice Tew. Inside, the chancel holds a richly decorated baptismal font. The Lady Chapel contains a reredos provided by Mrs Bowman-Hart, and St Michael’s chapel has an altar commemorating Charles Matthews and his son. Three side-chapel windows date from 1913, 1915 and 1916. The building now serves as a Ukrainian Greek Catholic church under the dedication of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and St Alban.
