Museum am Wasserturm Hohenlockstedt

The Museum am Wasserturm stands in the small town of Hohenlockstedt in Schleswig-Holstein. It occupies the former engine house of a protected water tower built in the early 20th century. The brick building sits among flat farmland north of the Elbe river, a quiet corner of the Steinburg district. The museum is best known for its Lockstedter Lager collection. During the First World War this military camp trained Finnish volunteers who later fought for Finland’s independence. Exhibits include uniforms, weapons and photographs from the camp’s years. A second permanent display tells the story of the German-Finnish Jäger movement of the 1910s. Shorter shows focus on local themes such as agriculture or village life in past centuries. Inside, visitors find three main rooms arranged around the tower’s old machinery. One room holds scale models of the camp’s huts and parade ground. Another displays rifles, letters and identity tags belonging to the Jäger volunteers. The third room hosts changing displays on rural crafts and trades. Outside, a low brick wall marks the site of the original water tower that once supplied the camp.
