Cwm Camlais Castle

Castell Cwm Camlais stands on a low grassy mound in the valley of the Camlais stream near Y Trallwng in Powys. It is a simple earthwork castle, built in the late 11th or 12th century from soil and stone with a surrounding ditch. The Normans introduced this style of fortification to Britain, and Welsh lords soon adopted it. The site is recognised by Cadw, the Welsh historic environment service, and listed as SAM BR037. It belongs to a group of similar mounds found mainly along the Welsh border, including parts of Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. Visitors find a quiet green mound beside a small river, with no stone walls or towers remaining. The earthworks and ditch are still visible, showing how the castle once stood above the valley floor. The surrounding farmland and woodland give a sense of the landscape the Normans and Welsh knew.
