Schloss Moos

Schloss Moos stands beside the Isar in the village of Moos, a four-winged Renaissance palace with four corner towers and an arcaded inner courtyard. The moat that once defended the medieval fortress still surrounds the building, though the water now reflects manicured lawns rather than weapons. A single-storey chapel dedicated to Saint George is attached to the southern wing, its simple Gothic windows contrasting with the palace’s richer detailing. The entire complex is listed as both a monument and an archaeological site, recognising layers from the Middle Ages through the early modern period. A broad gravel drive leads from the village street across a stone bridge to the main gate, where visitors first glimpse the symmetrical façades. The castle’s story begins in 1207, when a knight named Ebo de palude appears in a Niederaltaich monastery charter alongside the Counts of Bogen. After several changes of ownership and a violent 16th-century war, the Aichberg family rebuilt the fortress in 1377. Later, Katharina von Knöring financed a new Renaissance palace with four towers in 1520, and the Preysing family added a storey after a fire in 1619. In the 18th century Ernst Graf Kaspar created an English landscape garden, while his successor turned the estate into a working farm with stables and a brewery. The last male heir died in 1940, and the property passed to the Arco-Zinneberg family, who still own it. Visitors approach through wrought-iron gates set in a high brick wall, then cross the moat on a low stone bridge. The arcaded courtyard offers a quiet square of arcades and gravel, framed by the four wings and their steep roofs. On the garden side, clipped hedges and mature linden trees follow the gentle curves of the 1789 landscape design. The chapel’s whitewashed walls and steep roof can be seen from the lawn, its single bell marking quiet hours. Beyond the moat, the surrounding meadows stretch toward the river, giving the palace a sense of seclusion despite its village setting.
