Pfarrkirche hl. Margaretha, Apetlon

The Roman Catholic parish church of Apetlon stands in the centre of the village of Apetlon in Burgenland. It belongs to the deanery of Frauenkirchen in the diocese of Eisenstadt. The church is dedicated to Saint Margaret and has been a listed building for many years. The church was rebuilt in 1702 after the old parish was dissolved during the Reformation. The inscription above the main door records renovations in 1797, 1892 and 1939. In 1974 and 1975 the architect Josef Patzelt added a modern extension. The interior fittings were restored between 1976 and 1979. The east façade has a curved gable and a stone-helmeted tower. The late Baroque section contains a ribbed vault and an organ loft with a broad balcony on two stone columns. The modern extension follows. Inside, the high altar from the late 18th century shows Saint Margaret in an unusual iconography dated 1798. Side figures represent Saints Nicholas, Wendelin, Mary Magdalene and Catherine. A side altar holds the Black Madonna from the same period. The pulpit with the relief of the Miraculous Draught of Fishes is dated 1800. The fourteen Stations of the Cross date from the early 19th century, and the oil painting of Pentecost from the mid-18th century.
