Römermuseum in der Schule Rißtissen
The Römermuseum in der Schule Rißtissen is a small archaeological museum inside the local primary school in the Rißtissen district of Ehingen. It stands in a quiet corner of the town, surrounded by modern buildings and playing fields. The school itself dates from the mid-20th century, yet its classrooms now hold relics from a much older past. The museum was opened in 1960 to display finds from the former Roman fort at Rißtissen and its attached civilian settlement. Among the objects are oil lamps, coins, plaster casts of reliefs, moulds from a Roman counterfeiting workshop, roof tiles, household pottery, metal tools and weapons from Roman and Alemannic times. A large plan on the wall shows how the fort was organised and how far it stretched across the landscape. Visitors walk through a single room lined with glass cases and wall panels. The displays are arranged so that each group of objects tells part of the fort’s story. Outside, the school playground lies next to the site where the fort once stood, giving a sense of how the modern place grew from the ancient one.
