Sepulchral monument for Ewald Christian von Kleist

The monument to Ewald Christian von Kleist stands in a park near St Gertrude’s church in Frankfurt an der Oder. It takes the form of a column with a left-profile portrait of the Prussian officer and poet cut into its shaft. A commemorative plaque is fixed low on the column, and the whole is enclosed by a fence carried on four masonry posts.
The writer is honoured here because he served in the Prussian army and left a body of verse still read in the 18th century. Opposite the column another monument marks the place associated with Heinrich von Kleist, a different writer closely tied to the same city.
Visitors find a quiet green space beside the church, where two tall columns face each other across the lawn. The iron fence around the first column keeps the portrait clear of passing branches. The second column, a few metres away, carries its own plaque and invites a pause between the two memorials.
