Camera Austria
Camera Austria stands in Graz, Austria, where a small team runs both a respected quarterly magazine and a contemporary photography gallery. The magazine, Camera Austria International, began in 1980 with founders Manfred Willmann, Seiichi Furuya and Christine Frisinghelli. For decades it has shaped debates on photography, edited first by Willmann and later by Reinhard Braun. The gallery grew from early shows in the 1970s at Forum Stadtpark before moving in 1996 under the Camera Austria name. Since 2003 its exhibition rooms and public library occupy part of the Kunsthaus Graz. The gallery is known for ambitious shows that introduce new photographic voices to wider audiences. Every two years it awards the Camera Austria Prize, chosen by an international jury, bringing fresh perspectives to the city. Christine Frisinghelli guided the project for many years, shaping both the magazine and the gallery’s direction. Maren Lübbke-Tidow and Christina Töpfer later led the editorial side, keeping the publication lively and relevant. Together they have made Graz a modest but influential centre for photographic culture. Inside the Kunsthaus Graz visitors find bright, flexible spaces where changing exhibitions unfold. The publicly accessible library holds back issues of the magazine alongside critical essays and artist books. Large windows let daylight illuminate the prints, while the building’s modern curves contrast with the historic streets outside. The gallery’s programme mixes emerging talents with established names, offering quiet moments to study images. Nearby cafés and the Mur river add to the calm atmosphere of this cultural corner in the city.
