Alter Kasten, Großreifling

The Alte Kasten stands in the village of Großreifling in the municipality of Landl, in the Liezen district of Styria. It is a former grain storehouse under Denkmalschutz, a recognised monument. The building sits beside the local branch church, linked by a three-storey section dated 1608. The structure’s core dates from the late Gothic period and rises over three floors under a tall hipped roof with half-hipped ends. Above the pointed arch doorway are stonecutter’s marks and the dates 1529, 1608 and 1739. Inside, the ground floor forms a vaulted passage while the upper storeys feature overhanging oriel windows on corbels and windows with shaped surrounds. The attached 1608 wing still shows traces of sgraffito ornamentation on its façades. The entire complex offers a clear view of late-medieval building techniques and the way rural storehouses were organised. Its position beside the church makes it an unobtrusive yet striking landmark in the valley.
