Schloss Rosenegg, Ebenthal

Schloss Rosenegg stands in Ebenthal, a village in the southern Austrian province of Kärnten. Built in the 16th century as a manor house beside the Glann stream, it was enlarged in 1592 by Johann Franz von Greissenegg into a two-storey building topped by a broad hipped roof. For nearly two centuries it remained a feudal holding of Stift Viktring, a nearby Cistercian monastery. The castle’s west front carries a Renaissance doorway framed by the Greissenegg coat of arms. Above the door the date 1592 is cut into the stone, and a pair of tall windows lights the storey above. Inside, visitors see original 16th-century room layouts, vaulted ceilings and a wooden coffered ceiling that still shows its craftsmanship. The surrounding village of Ebenthal lies among rolling hills a few kilometres south of Klagenfurt. A quiet lane leads to the castle gate, where the stonework and the date 1592 greet every visitor before they step into the shaded courtyard.
