The Alfred-Machol monument stands in Erfurt outside the surgical clinic. It is a bronze bust created in 1953 by the sculptor Hans Walther. The clinic itself was rebuilt in 1928 under Machol’s leadership and is now the Frau-Mutter-Kind-Zentrum.

Alfred Machol was a leading surgeon in Erfurt from 1914 until 1933. He trained at Bonn University and later became a professor of surgery and orthopaedics. His friend Ferdinand Sauerbruch praised the new clinic as a perfect union of art and healing. Machol lived entirely for his work, calling the clinic his child.

The monument honours a doctor who was forced out by the Nazis. After 1933 he moved away and died in Naumburg. The writer Friedrich Wolf also commemorated him in the play Professor Mamlock. A bronze bust by Hans Walther remains on site as a quiet tribute.
