Pfarrkirche Kirchberg am Wagram

The Pfarrkirche Kirchberg am Wagram stands on a natural rise south-east of the market square in the Lower Austrian district of Tulln. This Gothic pseudo-basilica, dedicated to Saint Stephen, was built in the late 14th century and later transformed in the 18th century. Its tall tower with a bulbous Baroque helmet rises above the surrounding countryside, marking the church as a landmark for miles around. The church holds layers of history visible in its architecture and furnishings. The parish dates back to 1147, and the building was reconsecrated in 1726 after earlier Baroque alterations. A notable feature is the Madonna statue donated in 1679, which once drew pilgrims to a now-lost chapel before being moved here during the reforms of 1787. The interior reveals further traces of its past, including a 1906–1910 decorative scheme by Josef Klenkhart and stained-glass windows from 1919. Inside, the three-aisled nave opens into a raised central space with robust pilasters and Ionic capitals. The high altar, completed in 1712 by C. I. Carlone, depicts the stoning of Saint Stephen, while a 1674 Madonna statue occupies a place of honour behind the tabernacle. Side chapels contain altarpieces by Martin Johann Schmidt and Johann Georg Schmidt, and the pulpit from the mid-18th century is adorned with carved scenes and allegorical figures. The church’s furnishings, from Baroque wall altars to a late 18th-century organ by Ignaz Gatto, reflect its long role as both parish church and former pilgrimage site.
