Pfarrkirche Tieschen

The parish church of the Holy Trinity stands on a hillside terrace in Tieschen, a village in south-eastern Styria. Built in 1895 as a larger church around an earlier 1863 chapel, it was raised to parish status in 1902 after a Franciscan priory was added. The building is protected as a listed monument. The church’s architecture mixes late-nineteenth-century styles, with a plain façade and a three-storey tower capped by a pyramid roof. Inside, the nave is a single hall with flat ceiling and tall round-headed windows, while the three-bay choir preserves the 1863 chapel’s ribbed vault. The neobaroque fittings include a 1866 high altar painting of the Holy Trinity, side altars dedicated to Mary and Joseph, and stained-glass windows made in Graz in 1905. A white marble altar and ambo by the Straden sculptor Hannes Rauch were installed in 1994. Outside, a nine-metre statue of St Francis stands thirty metres north of the church. The adjoining former Franciscan monastery now serves as a guesthouse for parish retreats.
