Bad Bergzabern Observation Tower

Bad Bergzabern stands in the Südliche Weinstraße district of Rheinland-Pfalz, a recognised climatic health resort on the western edge of the Upper Rhine Plain. The town sits where the Haardt hills rise toward the Wasgau, the southern Pfälzerwald, and its centre lies in the Erlenbachtal valley. Sandstone from the region colours the buildings and the surrounding slopes. Three kilometres north-west the small district of Blankenborn nestles at the foot of the 487-metre Abtskopf. The town’s history is marked by its role in the 18th-century revolution. In November 1792 its citizens petitioned for annexation to the French Republic, and from January to March 1793 Bergzabern formed the short-lived “Bergzaberner Republik.” The rebuilt town centre still shows traces of the 18th-century baroque reconstruction led by Jonas Erikson Sundahl. A few Renaissance survivors, such as the former ducal Amtshaus of 1579, survive as inns and shops. Visitors climb the observation tower on the Querenberg ridge, 401 metres above sea level. From the platform there are long views over the vineyards of the Upper Rhine Plain and into the Pfälzerwald. The tower stands beside the restored Erlenbach stream in the Kurpark, where the open channel winds through the spa quarter. Paths lead from the park up the wooded slopes to the Abtskopf and the Steinkopf, offering quieter walks among sandstone crags and mixed woodland.
