Dientener Berge

The Dientener Berge form a main group of the Schieferalpen in Salzburg. They lie north and east of the Salzach valley, south of a line from Schönfeldspitze to Hochkönig, and east of Zeller See and the Saalfelden basin. The mountains join the Berchtesgadener Alps to the west. The range is mostly forested, with alpine meadows on the heights and scattered farms on the lower slopes. Only the Sonnenterrasse near Goldegg has a small cluster of high-altitude homes. The Dientnertal cuts through the heart of the mountains, splitting them into two roughly square halves. The western half, called the Hundstein stock, has the highest peaks including Hundstein at 2117 m, Hochkasern at 2017 m and Schwalbenwand at 2011 m. The eastern half, the Schneeberg-Hochglockner group, reaches 1938 m at Schneebergkreuz and several other summits over 1800 m. The Hochkeil, a lower outlier north of the Mühlbachtal, is still counted among the grassy uplands.
