Zeitbrücke-Museum

The Zeitbrücke-Museum stands in Gars am Kamp, a small town in Lower Austria’s Horn district. The building itself dates from 1883, when local master builder Leopold Wieser constructed the late-Historicist corner school in Kollergasse. After serving as a primary school from 1927, it became a museum in 1979 and now occupies three floors. The structure is protected as a listed monument. It belongs to the ten oldest community museums in Lower Austria still open to the public. The idea was first proposed in 1898 by the imperial conservator Pater Friedrich Endl, and the collection opened in 1902. Since moving to its present home in 1979, the museum has grown to include archaeology, Babenberg history, local crafts, a first Austrian trade museum, a reconstructed classroom and a summer-retreat section. Visitors enter three floors of displays. The basement shows Bronze Age and early medieval finds from the Gars region. The first floor traces the Babenberg dynasty through models, original relics and church sculptures such as a painted Pietà from the 1440s. The top floor covers trade history, school life around 1900 and the town’s rise as a summer resort after the Kamptal railway arrived in 1889. A special room is dedicated to Franz von Suppè, whose operettas funded his Gars villa and whose memorabilia form the only permanent European exhibition on his life.
