Schössl Courtyard Estate
Schloss Axtheid stands in the village of Axtheid, part of Vilseck in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. It is a two-storey plastered stone building with a half-hipped roof, built at the end of the 16th century. A small tower with a timber upper floor and a pyramid roof rises from one corner. The house is marked on its front with the date 1799, and the tower bears the year 1656 from repairs after the Thirty Years’ War. A second building, painted to match the main house, and a farmyard complete the group. The building once served as the residence of the Burgrave of Dagestein castle and as an administrative seat for the Bishop of Bamberg. The Vilseck rent-roll of 1493–1506 first records the estate, though Stephan Steinlinger is named as Burgrave there as early as 1435. Jobst Merz of Zogenreuth and Ammerthal and his son Hans Hieronymus rebuilt the house in 1656. The Grösl family owned it from 1774 until 1949, giving the place its local name ‘beim Grösl’. Visitors see the main building with its plain plaster walls and red corner pilasters. The stair-tower’s timber gallery and pointed roof add a touch of half-timbered charm. Inside, simple rooms reflect the modest scale of a rural seat rather than a grand palace. The farmyard and matching outbuilding show how the estate once worked. From the lane the house presents a quiet, unassuming front, its modest scale and warm colours blending with the surrounding village.
