Church of All Saints

All Saints’ Church stands in the village of Lathbury, a quiet parish within the City of Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire. Built in the 12th century, it is one of the oldest surviving churches in the area and was awarded Grade I listed status in 1966 for its historical importance. The building combines Norman, Early English and Decorated styles, showing how its architecture evolved over centuries. A fourteenth-century clock hangs in the west tower, which also holds four bells. The church retains many original features, including a plain gable-roofed south porch and a lead-covered roof. Inside, the nave is lit by six two-light clerestory windows and supported by sculpted stone corbels. The south aisle contains a massive circular pillar carved with dragons and foliage, likely brought back by a crusader. A piscina in the south aisle marks the site of an ancient altar, and steps lead up to where the rood loft once stood. The chancel arch is pointed, and its east window holds stained glass depicting Christ blessing, surrounded by angels and symbols. Black and white marble paving in the chancel bears memorials to the Andrewes family, including a poetic epitaph for Margaret Andrewes. Visitors find a peaceful interior where medieval wall paintings survive beneath the whitewash. The octagonal oak pulpit stands near a brass plate recording the Andrewes arms and crest. In the north aisle, a marble monument commemorates Henry Uthwatt, and nearby lies his wife Frances. A brass plate shows the Chandflower family kneeling in Elizabethan costume, while another brass records Lady Leigh’s death in 1678. The church register begins in 1690, offering a link to centuries of local history.
