Coghinas

The Coghinas is a river in northern Sardinia, flowing for 115 kilometres. It is the third longest river on the island, after the Tirso and the Flumendosa. Its drainage basin covers 2,551 square kilometres. The river rises in the Mountains of Alà, in the province of Olbia-Tempio. It crosses the Anglona region before reaching the Gulf of Asinara. Two dams were built to control floods, store water and generate electricity. These dams created Lake Coghinas and Lake Casteldoria. The larger Lake Coghinas lies upstream, while the smaller Casteldoria reservoir sits further down. Together they regulate the river’s flow and provide water for the surrounding land. Visitors to the area find a wide river valley framed by rolling hills. The lakes offer calm waters surrounded by natural landscapes. Anglers visit to fish, while walkers follow paths along the shorelines. The lower reaches near Badesi and Valledoria open onto the Gulf of Asinara, where the river meets the sea.
