Corby Cube

Corby Cube stands in the centre of Corby, a town in Northamptonshire. It is a modern municipal building completed in 2010 to serve as the headquarters of Corby Borough Council. The structure contains a council chamber, a register office, a public library, a 400-seat theatre and a 100-seat studio. Designed by Hawkins\Brown and built by Galliford Try, the building cost £47.5 million. It was originally intended to house Corby Borough Council, which was abolished in 2021. The building’s troubled history includes design flaws and large cost overruns. A 2012 report found the Cube was built with almost double its original budget and only half the planned capacity. Water leaked through the council chamber’s ceiling during heavy rain in 2013, forcing meetings into the canteen. Auditors later criticised poor financial management and legal irregularities in land deals linked to the project. The council spent an extra £600,000 on roof repairs after leaks were discovered. Visitors find a busy public space with a theatre, library and register office inside the building. The 400-seat theatre hosts performances while the 100-seat studio offers smaller events. The public library provides books and study areas for local residents. The council chamber remains in use despite past problems. Outside, the Cube sits among shops and offices in Corby town centre.
