Shalloch on Minnoch is a hill in the Range of the Awful Hand, a sub-range of the Galloway Hills in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. It stands near the Shalloch estate, from which it takes its name. The hill was once called Bellachgy Hill, and its Gaelic name is Càrn Seilich. Climbers often start from Stinchar bridge to the north or include it in a full traverse of the range. Another nearby summit is Caerloch Dhu, whose Gaelic name means ‘the black place of four-footed animals’.
The hill is worth the journey for walkers who enjoy remote upland scenery in south-west Scotland. Its position in the Range of the Awful Hand gives it a dramatic setting among the Galloway Hills. The crossing of the full range is a recognised challenge for experienced hillgoers. The Gaelic names show how the land was described long ago by those who lived nearby. Its quiet slopes contrast with busier peaks elsewhere in the Southern Uplands.
On the hill a visitor finds wide, grassy slopes and open moorland with few paths. The summit offers views across the surrounding hills and towards the coast. The terrain is rough underfoot, so sturdy boots are needed. Nearby Caerloch Dhu adds another small summit to explore. The sense of space and solitude is strong, making it a rewarding place for those who seek it.
