Castell Prin

Castell Prin stands on a low hill above Pen-hw in Newport, south Wales. It is a small Iron Age hillfort, one of about 570 known in Wales. Cadw recognises it as a scheduled ancient monument under the number MM130. Like most hillforts its purpose was defence, giving the inhabitants a clear view over the surrounding countryside. The Romans later strengthened many such forts across Britain between 200 BC and AD 43. The site offers a quiet place to walk among grassy ramparts and shallow ditches. A single entrance leads into the roughly rectangular enclosure where traces of round houses can still be seen. The hilltop position once allowed watchers to spot approaching groups long before they arrived. The fort sits within farmland, so the only sounds are the wind and birdsong. Visitors find a modest grassy mound with low stone walls marking the defences. The interior is open and easy to explore on foot. From the top there are wide views over the Usk valley towards the Bristol Channel. The site is small enough to visit in under an hour yet it still conveys the strategic thinking of its Iron Age builders.
