Earl’s Court tube station
Earl’s Court station is a Grade II listed Underground hub in west London where the District and Piccadilly lines meet. It stands on the A3220 at the edge of Earl’s Court Village, with one entrance on Earl’s Court Road and another on Warwick Road. The station has step-free access via lifts at the eastern entrance and escalators added in 1911. Beneath the surface platforms, deep-tube Piccadilly line tunnels were built without needing a separate lift shaft. The brick-built ticket hall on Earl’s Court Road dates from 1915, while the Warwick Road side still shows its 1905–06 Piccadilly line frontage. The station opened in 1871 as a modest wooden booking office and soon became a busy interchange. By 1874 five local routes passed through Earl’s Court, but a fire in 1875 destroyed the first building. A larger replacement opened in 1878 on the west side of Earl’s Court Road. In 1906 the Piccadilly line arrived, and in 1911 Earl’s Court gained the first escalators on the Underground network. Wartime use turned part of the station into a munitions factory, and in 1984 the building was recognised with Grade II listing. Visitors find two street-level entrances leading to a shared concourse under the District line platforms. The eastern ticket hall retains its red-brick 1915 design by Harry Ford, while the western entrance shows 1905–06 detailing. Below ground, lifts and the century-old escalators connect to the Piccadilly line’s deep tunnels. Nearby are Nevern Square and Philbeach Gardens, and the station sits close to Bupa Cromwell Hospital and a Tesco. The area around Earl’s Court Gardens shows how the station anchors a mixed commercial and residential quarter.
