Marktplatz 27 (Kirchberg am Wagram)

The former district court and prison at Marktplatz 27 in Kirchberg am Wagram now serves as a cultural centre. The complex sits on the main square of this small town in the Tulln district of Lower Austria. It has been protected as a historic monument since the 1980s. Built in 1912–13 by Franz Österreicher in a neoclassical style, the building originally housed both the district court and a prison. Until 1974 it operated as an annex of the Kaiserebersdorf institution for minors, functioning like a reform school. After closure it was used as an archive store until 2011, when the site was cleared and restored for its new role. Visitors enter through a broad street front topped by a pedimented portal. Behind the court building stands the former prison, enclosed by a four-metre wall and a 134-square-metre exercise yard. A 1,275-square-metre garden with mature trees lies beyond, framed by open wooden fences on masonry posts. Inside, three floors contain former court offices, cells, and workrooms now adapted for exhibitions and events.
