Foundling Hospital, Bloomsbury

The Foundling Hospital stands in Bloomsbury, London, on land once called Lamb’s Conduit Field. Built between 1742 and 1752 to Theodore Jacobsen’s plain brick design, it enclosed a courtyard with two wings and a chapel. The western wing opened in 1745, the eastern in 1752 to separate boys from girls. At first the hospital admitted children without question, using tokens such as coins or scraps of paper to aid future identification. By the 1750s demand overwhelmed the charity, forcing a ballot system with red, white and black balls. Parliament later funded unrestricted entry, but the surge in numbers led to stricter rules by the early 19th century. The hospital became a fashionable cause among leading figures. The founding charter listed seventeen dukes, twenty-nine earls and many others among its governors. Among them were Thomas Coram, who secured the royal charter in 1739, and the novelist Henry Fielding, who argued for the rescue of “first children” of unmarried mothers. The hospital also attracted artists and musicians; George Frideric Handel donated an organ and gave annual benefit concerts. His Messiah was first performed there in 1754, and the composer became a lifelong supporter. Visitors today see the original chapel and parts of the brick wings standing in a quiet corner of Bloomsbury. The interior holds displays of tokens left by parents, small tokens of fabric or paper that once offered hope of reunion. The hospital’s story is told through letters, admission records and objects once used by the children. Outside, the building’s plain Georgian lines recall its purpose as a place of care rather than grandeur. The site remains a reminder of 18th-century philanthropy and the complex history of child welfare in London.
