Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium Erlangen

The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium stands in Erlangen, a city west of the Regnitz in Bavaria. Founded in the 1960s as the Oberrealschule Erlangen-West, it began with about sixty pupils in two classes. The school moved into its own building as numbers grew, and later added mobile classrooms in the 1980s. A separate afternoon care and canteen building was added in 2005. It is named after the doctor and philosopher Albert Schweitzer. The school offers science, maths and languages as core subjects. Pupils start English in grade five and choose Latin or French in grade six. In grade eight they pick a scientific or linguistic branch, with chemistry or Spanish introduced accordingly. Older pupils can choose between two languages or two sciences for their final years. The Abitur examination concludes their studies. The school belongs to the network ‘School without Racism – School with Courage’ and serves as a handball base. It cooperates with HC Erlangen, and its handball coach Frank Bergemann is a notable teacher. Among its alumni is computer scientist Philipp Koehn.
