Stadt- und Regionalmuseum Perleberg

The Stadt- und Regionalmuseum Perleberg stands in a row of protected buildings on Mönchort, close to the old Schuhmarkt square in the heart of the town. It began in 1905 as a small cabinet of local antiquities and has grown through donations and excavations across the Prignitz region. The core building, Mönchort 7, once housed a girls’ high school attended by the singer Lotte Lehmann.

The museum’s value lies in its deep local roots and the breadth of its collections. It holds the 1937 Hacksilber hoard from Düpow, medieval grave slabs from the town church, and a complete 1896 colonial-goods shopfront rescued from Wittenberger Straße. Archaeologists working with the museum uncovered a 3.5-metre-deep medieval well in 2008 and reconstructed it in front of the entrance. The library preserves 1600 volumes from the Gans zu Putlitz estate and over 13 900 photographs.

Inside, visitors find permanent displays on Prignitz archaeology, Perleberg’s urban past, notable residents and rural traditions. The restored brick well and salvaged church portal stand on the courtyard, while changing exhibitions fill the upper rooms. The building itself, once a girls’ school and later an agricultural college, still carries traces of its varied history.
