Church of Saint John the Baptist

The Church of Saint John the Baptist stands in Tuebrook, a Liverpool suburb, on the corner of West Derby Road and Green Lane. Built in the 1860s by George Frederick Bodley, it is a Grade I listed building of exceptional architectural interest. The site also includes a Victorian vicarage and a mortuary house, both designed by Bodley and Grade II listed. South of the church is the Brockman Memorial Hall, an early venue for the Beatles. The church is worth visiting for its rich Victorian architecture and its role in local history. The interior features resplendent Bodley fittings, vibrant decoration, and stained glass by Morris & Co. and Burne-Jones. The organ, built by William Hill and Son in 1867, remains largely unaltered and holds an Historic Organ Certificate. The church also holds memorials by Henry Hare and Sir Ninian Comper. Inside, visitors find a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a west tower, and a chancel with a chapel. The walls and roofs are richly stencilled, and the east wall of the nave features a wall painting by C. E. Kempe. The Chapel of the Holy Rood contains a reredos, altar, and credence table adapted from a rood screen by Bodley. The churchyard includes the ruins of a Victorian mortuary house.
