Florin Court

Florin Court stands on the eastern edge of Charterhouse Square in Smithfield, London. The building is an Art Deco and Streamline Moderne structure completed in 1936 by Guy Morgan and Partners. Its curved façade curves gracefully along the square, with projecting wings and setbacks on the eighth and ninth floors. The walls are clad in beige bricks made by Williamson Cliff Ltd and sit over a steel frame. A roof garden and basement swimming pool add to the building’s amenities. The building is notable for its early place in the Clerkenwell area’s residential history. Regalian Properties refurbished it in the late 1980s under Hildebrand & Clicker architects, updating interiors and adding facilities. Before that, the ground floor housed a porter’s office and flat, while the basement once contained a restaurant, cocktail bar, and clubroom. The site previously held Georgian buildings used as a vicarage and a ladies’ school until 1859, later becoming a staff hostel for Copestake, Crampton & Co. Ltd. Visitors find a Grade II-listed building with nine floors and 120 flats. Communal spaces include a basement swimming pool, sauna, gym, lounge with a small library, Wi-Fi area, laundry room, and garage. Two lifts serve the floors. The building’s exterior has appeared in television and film, including as Hercule Poirot’s Whitehaven Mansions in *Agatha Christie’s Poirot* and as a location in *Pennyworth* and *See How They Run*.
