Freilichtmuseum Glentleiten
The Freilichtmuseum Glentleiten is an open-air museum in the Bavarian Prealps, above the village of Großweil between Murnau and Kochelsee. It sits on forty hectares of meadows and fields, most of them in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Over seventy original farmsteads, workshops and alpine huts have been rebuilt here to show how rural life worked in the 18th and 19th centuries. A working brewery, several mills and a sawmill sit among orchards and pastures where rare local breeds graze. The museum keeps more than eighty thousand everyday objects—tools, textiles, furniture and household items—so visitors can see how people lived and worked. Every day artisans demonstrate traditional crafts such as weaving, blacksmithing, rope-making and lace-bobbin work. Seasonal events like a charcoal-burners’ week, a mill day and an old-tractor meeting add to the programme. At the end of each year a Christmas market marks the closing of the season. Paths lead past the painted farmhouses, through kitchen gardens and along hedged fields. Inside the buildings visitors find fully furnished rooms, workshops and even a small farmhouse designed for children to explore. The entrance building houses a shop, a café and the working brewery where visitors can watch the brewing process.
