Knockhill Racing Circuit

Knockhill Racing Circuit stands in the Fife countryside nine kilometres north of Dunfermline. Created from an old mineral railway closed in 1951, it opened in September 1974 and is Scotland’s only FIA-approved track. The circuit has three layouts: a 2.1-kilometre International course with nine corners, a 1.6-kilometre National course with ten corners, and a 0.5-kilometre tri-oval. Its 37-metre elevation change and 10-metre-wide tarmac make each lap a test of skill. Derek Butcher bought the circuit in 1984 and transformed it into a venue for major British championships. Knockhill hosted the British Touring Car Championship for twelve years until 2002, then returned in 2004 with live ITV coverage. The track is known for corners such as Duffus Dip, a fast blind right-hander on a downhill approach. Leslie’s Bend was renamed after driver David Leslie in 2008, and Taylor’s hairpin offers one of the UK’s tightest apexes. The Chicane forces drivers to tackle a second blind right-hander with sausage kerbs to deter cutting. Clark’s corner rises uphill and often lifts cars onto two wheels, while Hislop’s follows the route of the old railway line. The final straight leads to the finish past the pit lane, where cars accelerate hard uphill. Visitors find a range of facilities beyond the main track. A concrete rally stage, 500-metre karting circuit, skid pan and offroad courses sit around the circuit. Track-driving experiences use Ferraris, Aston Martins and single-seater formula cars. Rally fans can drive modified Fiestas on the rally stage, while skid-control sessions use various road cars. Rallycross events run on the reprofiled infield course, and disability taster days introduce newcomers to motorsport. The circuit also appears in music videos, racing games and television programmes such as Top Gear.
