Maxerkapelle

The Maxerkapelle stands beside the Kalksteiner Bach just before it joins the Villgratenbach at the entrance to the village of Kalkstein in Innervillgraten. It belongs to the Diocese of Innsbruck and is protected as a listed monument. The chapel is dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk and forms part of the Sillian deanery. Built in 1749 on the site of an earlier wayside shrine from 1733, the chapel is a simple rectangular structure under a gabled roof with a small wooden bell turret. Inside, a barrel vault with lunettes spans the nave, while the slightly raised choir ends in three sides. Plain rectangular windows let in steady light, and a carved wooden arch separates the sanctuary from the nave. The Baroque high altar dates from the late 17th century and features spiral columns entwined with foliage, double-headed eagles on consoles, and a broken pediment above the main painting. The altarpiece shows Saint John of Nepomuk and is flanked by statues of Saints Andrew and John of Nepomuk, with a tabernacle below. Behind the altar, a painted canopy arches over the scene, adding depth to the small interior.
