Burgstelle Isenburg

The Isenburg is the ruined remains of a high-medieval hilltop castle standing 509 metres above sea level west of the Isenburger Höfe in Horb am Neckar. Built in the 12th century by a noble family linked to the counts of Hohenberg, it once guarded a small settlement called Hisenburg or Isenburk. The fortress was designed as an interrupted stronghold with a neck ditch and a square keep, but by 1525 it had collapsed into ruins. The site still shows traces of its defences and the keep’s foundations. A modern rest area with a wooden shelter now occupies the crest, offering a quiet place to pause. Visitors can walk the old ramparts and imagine the castle’s former strength. The surrounding woodland and distant Neckar valley provide a peaceful backdrop. A short path leads from the rest area to the highest point of the former bergfried. From there the view stretches across the countryside once controlled by the Isenburg lords. The site is small but rewarding for anyone interested in medieval fortifications.
