Castle Hotel

The Castle Hotel stands in the centre of Taunton, Somerset, in a Grade II listed building from the late 18th century. It occupies the site of a former 12th-century Norman fortress known as Taunton Castle. The hotel incorporates Castle Bow, a Grade I listed structure that once formed the east gate of the castle precincts. Castle Bow still displays 13th-century chamfered arches and corner buttresses with setoffs. The main building was once called Clarke’s Hotel before it became the Castle Hotel. The hotel has been run by the Chapman family for more than seventy years. Kit Chapman, the current owner, is known for his political views and membership of The Garrick Club. The hotel’s restaurant, Brazz, has featured head chefs such as Christopher Oakes, Gary Rhodes, and Phil Vickery. Christopher Oakes earned the restaurant a Michelin star, though it was later lost in 2008. The current head chef is Oliver Jackson.
