Schöneburg
The Schöneburg, also known as the Old Castle, stands on a northern ridge of the Schorn mountain in the Rhön range near Dermbach. The ruins sit at 520 metres above sea level on a site that once overlooked an ancient trade route. It was built by Count Erpho of Nithardishusen in the Middle Ages as part of a network of fortifications. The castle helped control the road from Geisa through Dermbach toward Wasungen along the upper Oechse valley. Nearby early Iron Age defences at Dermbach and Baier added to the region’s strategic importance. The rectangular stronghold measured forty-two metres from north to south and thirty metres east to west. A rampart with a deep ditch protected three sides, while steep slopes guarded the northwest. The entrance lay to the south where three stone buildings once stood. Their crumbling foundations remain visible today. Archaeologists recognise the layout as typical of 12th-century noble residences in the region. Visitors reach the site along a quiet woodland path that rises through beech and spruce. From the plateau there are wide views over the Oechse valley and the surrounding Rhön hills. The air is still except for the rustle of leaves and distant farm noises. The ruins show how small medieval castles were built to command the landscape. A bench near the edge offers a place to rest and take in the scenery.
